For the 2 580 gaming fanatics cramming the Coca-Cola Dome this weekend for rAge, the country’s most spectacular gaming expo, performance is everything – and Intel’s pulled out all the stops this year with an unprecedented display of server power they believe will have seasoned gamers drooling.
The company has provided no fewer than 18 high-end servers to create what they say is the biggest recreational local area network (LAN) on the African continent to meet the needs of some serious gaming action.
Vince Resente, Intel’s Enterprise Technology Specialist, says the machines feature the Intel Xeon Quad Processor with Hyper Threading, which “can easily perform” all the functions required at the event – from supplying DHCP addresses, allowing DNS queries, hosting local websites and gaming servers, controlling internet access and monitoring network performance.
“This is some of the most serious server power put together in South Africa for some time – and we’ll probably need every ounce of it,” said Resente.
Organised and managed by NAG Magazine, the country’s leading gaming, computer and technology magazine, this year’s event was again sold out in a matter of hours. Besides the NAG LAN, the expo will have everything from tech stuff to the hottest new games.
